Rotorua is most famous for having geothermal areas that include pools of bubbling mud and pools of boiling hot water. The city is infamously known as "sulphur city" due to the hydrogen sulphide emissions responsible for the rotten smell that surrounds this area.... so yeah, this city stinks, but only to your sense of smell!
A couple months ago I read that an 8 year old boy boiled to death when he fell into one of the hot spots - tragic indeed. You can see some pictures of the place in which this happened here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/saahs28/8-year-old-boy-boiled-alive-1yzj
However, Rotorua is also very well known for being an acquatic paradise with 17 lakes - it sure is an ideal place for fishing, waterskiing or swimming! Just remember not to fall into one of those boiling-mud pockets and if you do, remind someone to take photos of it so we can post them HERE!
